How to Become a Licensed Esthetician in Kansas

Step 1: Complete a State Approved Esthetics Program

Step 2: Complete and Submit the Practitioner License Application

You will need to submit the following to complete the process:

• A fully completed, typed, and signed Practitioner License Application (handwritten applications are not accepted)
• A check/money order made payable to the Kansas Board of Cosmetology to pay the $45 non-refundable application fee
• A clear and legible copy of your valid photo identification
• Legal documentation, such as a marriage license, proving any name changes
• Proof that you have successfully completed 1,000 hours of esthetics coursework
• Proof of high school graduation or G.E.D.

Once you have completed the application, print it out, sign it, and mail the application, payment, and the required documents to:

The Board asks that you allow 7 – 10 business days to process your application once it has been received.

Schedule and Pay for Your Exams

Ergometrics has been contracted by the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology to administer the National Testing Network written and practical exams. When your application has been approved, you can go online to the Exam Portal and schedule your exams through Ergometrics. You can also pay for your exams using the Exam Portal. The written exam and practical exams are $75 each. The fee to retake the exams is also $75. You can pay your exam fees online via credit or debit card. Exam fees are non-refundable.

If you wish to pay for your exams by check or money order, simply log into your account at www.cosmetologykansas.com click on “I do not want to pay by Credit Card” and print the form you need. Complete and submit the form along with your cashier’s check or money order made payable to National Testing Network.

Mail your completed form and payment to:

In two weeks you should receive a voucher via email that you can use to go online and schedule your exams.

Your school must submit your training hours to the testing company on the Ergometrics website.

Temporary Permit

The Kansas Board of Cosmetology also allows applicants to apply for a temporary permit. The temporary permit will allow you to work under the supervision of a state licensed esthetician from the time you graduate from a state-approved school until you pass your state licensing exams.

In order to work as an esthetician during the designated time period, you will need to apply for and receive a temporary permit. Please be aware that the temporary permit is issued with an expiration date which is 6 weeks from the date of issue. Temporary permits cannot be extended. Your temporary permit will become null and void if you fail either of the esthetician exams.

To apply for a temporary permit, simply do the following:

1. Complete, sign, and print the Application for Temporary Permit
2. Pay the non-refundable $15 application fee using your credit card or by attaching a check or money order made payable to the Kansas Board of Cosmetology.

Allow 7 to 10 business days for the Board to receive and process your application. You should receive your temporary permit in the mail soon after your application has been processed.

Step 3: Take and Pass the Written and Practical Esthetician Examinations

Preparing for the Written and Practical Exams

The National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) recommends the following reference materials to help you prepare for and pass the written (theory) and practical esthetics exams, which can be purchased at discounted prices on Amazon:

• Milady Standard Esthetics: Fundamentals (2013, 11th Edition)
• Salon Fundamentals: Esthetics Textbook (2007, 11th printing, 2nd Edition, August 2013)

We also recommend that you purchase and study the following books in preparation for your exams:

• Salon Fundamentals Esthetics Licensure Exam Prep Book (Spiral-bound – 2007)
• Modern Esthetics: A Scientific Source for Estheticians (Milady)

What to Bring to Your Exams

It is recommended that you arrive at least 30 minutes early to the testing site to allow time for registration.

You will need to ensure you bring the following to your exams:

• Two proper forms of identification. Acceptable forms of identification can be found on page 3 of the Candidate Information Bulletin.
• For the practical exam, you will need an exam kit with various supplies and a clean and sanitary head mannequin. A complete list of necessary supplies begins on page 26 of the Candidate Information Bulletin.
