Step 1: Complete a State Approved Esthetics Program
- Using a cosmetic preparation such as a lotion, tonic, cream, or clay as well as any electrical or any other device to clean, stimulate, tone, exercise, massage, or beautify the skin of the human body
- Tinting or trimming eyelashes or eyebrows
- Applying eyelashes or makeup
The Maine Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Board requires you to be at least 17 years old and have completed the 10th grade or higher in order to become an esthetician. You will also be required to complete 600 hours of esthetic training at a state-approved cosmetology school.
In lieu of esthetics training, applicants are allowed to complete a 1,000-hour apprenticeship under the careful guidance of a licensed esthetician.

Step 3: Take and Pass the Written and Practical Esthetician Examinations
Preparing for the Written and Practical Exams
The National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) recommends the following reference materials to help you prepare for and pass the written (theory) and practical esthetics exams, which can be purchased at discounted prices on Amazon:
- Milady Standard Esthetics: Fundamentals (2013, 11th Edition)
- Salon Fundamentals: Esthetics Textbook (2007, 11th printing, 2nd Edition, August 2013)

The Written Esthetics Examination
The written exam is developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). You will have 90 minutes to complete this multiple-choice exam. A total of 60 percent of exam questions will pertain to scientific concepts such as:
- Sanitation and infection control
- Skin conditions, disorders, and diseases
- Anatomy and physiology
- Chemistry
- Skin care products
- Factors that affect the skin
The other 40 percent of the test questions will be about esthetics practices and include the following topics:
- Skin analysis
- Client consultation
- Extraction and exfoliation procedures
- Contraindications for treatment
- Use of masks

What to Bring to the Practical Examination
After your application to test has been approved, you will receive a candidate number. This will be printed on your admission letter and will be used to identify you as a candidate for testing.
You must wear clean professional attire to the exam, although uniforms are not required. Plan to arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. Plan for any unexpected delays as late candidates will need to re-apply and pay again.
You will need to ensure you bring the following to your exams:
- Your Admission Letter
- A valid driver’s license or state identification card
- A testing supply kit (for more details about what to include in your kit see 10 page of the Candidate Information Bulletin)
- A mannequin head with no permanent makeup (your mannequin head must have removable makeup already applied before you arrive to the test site)
Live models are not permitted.
The Practical Esthetics Examination
The NIC practical exam covers these ten core sections:
- Work Area and Client Preparation, and Set Up of Universal Supplies (First client)
- Cleansing of the Face with Product
- Exfoliating the Face with Product, Using Facial Brush, Including Towel Steaming
- Massaging the Face with Product
- Work Area and New Client Preparation, and Set Up of Supplies (Second client)
- Hair Removal of the Eyebrows by Tweezing and Using Simulated Soft Wax
- Particle Microdermabrasion on the Forehead
- Facial Mask and Conclusion of Facial Service
- Facial Makeup
- Blood Exposure Procedure
You must score a 75% or better on both exams in order to pass.
You can download a copy of your results from the DL Roope website within 7 to 10 business days after testing if you made this election on your exam application. You will need your candidate number and date of birth. A copy of this letter is sent to the board as proof of passing the exams so that your license can be issued when they receive your application for licensure.
Step 4: Apply for Your Maine Esthetician License
- Your license and background check fee of $41 made payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine (or your credit card authorization form)
- Your notification of passing the exam
- Proof that you are at least 17 years old such as a driver’s license or birth certificate
- Proof that you have successfully completed at least a 10th-grade education
- An affidavit of hours completed from your school or supervisor’
Step 5: Renew Your Maine Esthetician License Every Year
You must apply for your renewal online and pay a $20 renewal fee. Maine does not require estheticians to complete continuing education credits to renew their license.
Esthetician License Reciprocity in Maine
To apply for esthetician licensure via endorsement, you will need to submit an Application for License by Endorsement along with:
- Your license and background check fee of $41 made payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine (or your credit card authorization form)
- Proof of being at least 17 years of age such as a birth certificate or driver’s license
- Proof of successfully completing at least a 10th-grade education
- An original verification of licensure from the state where your esthetician license is current
